Short biography about the Yakuza godmother Fumiko Taoka (田岡文子), who was the wife of the Yamaguchi-gumi (六代目山口組) (山菱) boss Kazuo Taoka (田岡 一雄). Fumiko led the Yamaguchi-gumi for several years in the 1980s and for decades was a main force behind its success and to this day is the only lady to woman to hold this position.

In most Yazuka clans, the wife of the Kumicho is to be held with the exact level of respect (and rank) as the husband. This is especially important, and witnessed, during times the Kumicho is away (due to prison or even vacation). The Kumicho is always looked upon, and referred to, as the father… while the wife, naturally is the mother of the clan. It is quite evident that Fumiko set the precedent for this tradition.
The only other time I have really seen this in effect, both in the past and today, is the Neapolitan (Italian) Camorra.
