石川県能登地方でマグニチュード7.6の地震が発生した1日の夕方、震央に近い輪島市の観光名所「朝市通り」周辺で火災が発生し、200棟以上の住宅や店舗に燃え広がった。大規模火災が鎮圧状態になったのは、2日午前のことだった。

能登半島で取材を続けるBBCのジーン・マケンジー特派員が3日朝、輪島市内にたどり着き、まだ煙がくすぶる現場から報告した。

石川県によると、3日午後までの時点で輪島市内で確認された死者は39人、重傷者は9人、軽傷者は42人に上る。家屋への被害は甚大で、その数は「多数」とのみ県は記録している。
