Stevie Wonder’s ‘not blind’ conspiracy theory explained

[Music] me seeing and all that. The truth is shortly after my birth, I became blind. Stevie Wonder just called to say yes, he actually is blind. During a July 8th concert in Cardiff, Wales, the legendary singer shot down the ridiculous long-standing rumor that he is somehow faking his blindness. The facts are Steveland Hardaway Morris was born in 1950, 6 weeks premature, and tragically lost his vision as a newborn as a result of high oxygen levels in the incubator. So, where did this outlandish theory come from? For years, a few celebs have made cracks that Stevie secretly can see, including comedian Anthony Anderson on Steven Cobear in 2016. What y’all don’t know Stevie can see. Stevie can see. It’s just an act. So, it’s a long con. Yes. I’m telling you, have him on the show. Put stuff in his way. I bet you he step over it. Three years later on Inside the NBA, Shaquille O’Neal claims Stevie once recognized him when they rode in the same elevator. He comes in, says, “What’s up, Shaq?” Presses the button. Presses the button, gets up on the floor, bathtub, goes to his room. I went and called every person I knew. Come on, Shaq. Then at the 2024 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, speculation resurfaced. Stevie gave a speech and performed in front of two teleprompterss. Here we go. Are y’all ready? This led Politico reporter Ben Jacobs to tweet, “In case you were wondering, the teleprompter is not on as Stevie Wonder is speaking.” Yeah, no duh. These days, it’s hard to tell what online conspiracy theories are a joke and which memes have some truth behind them. Just ask Leam Michelle. For everyone who thinks that I can’t read, like I was on the debate team. This week alone, Elmo’s account on X was hacked, leading some to believe the Sesame Street character had snapped. Also this week, Britney Spears danced into internet infamy once again when she falsely claimed she has a new kid. In an Instagram caption, she wrote that she adopted a beautiful baby girl named Lennon London Spears. Oh, baby, baby. How were we supposed to know it was a joke? But at least one crazy online rumor can finally be put to rest. Stevie Wonder is blind and has been blind for 75 years. In an emotional moment from his Love, Light, and Song tour in the UK, the 23-time Grammy winner called losing his sight a blessing because it has allowed him to see people for who they really are. See people in the spirit of them. Not how they look, not what color they are, but what color is their spirit. [Applause]

Stevie Wonder is shooting down the ridiculous rumor that he is faking his blindness. Taking after Lea Michele — long dogged by an illiteracy lie about her — Wonder, 75, addressed the conspiracy theory head on during his “Love, Light and Song” tour stop in Wales, UK. While it’s unclear where the outlandish notion began, a few moments over the past decade have called the “Superstition” singer’s vision into question — from Anthony Anderson to Shaquille O’Neal to the 2024 Democratic National Convention.
