Lyrics:
Suzanne takes you down to her place near the river
You can hear the boats go by
You can spend the night beside her
And you know that she’s half crazy
But that’s why you want to be there
And she feeds you tea and oranges
That come all the way from China
And just when you mean to tell her
That you have no love to give her
Then she gets you on her wavelength
And she lets the river answer
That you’ve always been her lover
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know that she will trust you
For you’ve touched her perfect body with your mind
And Jesus was a sailor
When he walked upon the water
And he spent a long time watching
From his lonely wooden tower
And when he knew for certain
Only drowning men could see him
He said “All men will be sailors then
Until the sea shall free them”
But he himself was broken
Long before the sky would open
Forsaken, almost human
He sank beneath your wisdom like a stone
And you want to travel with him
And you want to travel blind
And you think maybe you’ll trust him
For he’s touched your perfect body with his mind
Now Suzanne takes your hand
And she leads you to the river
She is wearing rags and feathers
From Salvation Army counters
And the sun pours down like honey
On Our Lady of the Harbour
And she shows you where to look
Among the garbage and the flowers
There are heroes in the seaweed
There are children in the morning
They are leaning out for love
And they will lean that way forever
While Suzanne holds the mirror
And you want to travel with her
And you want to travel blind
And you know you can trust her
For she’s touched your perfect body with her mind

That is so unbelievably heartwarming when a person has just passed away.
My Moms name is Suzanne, Jesus is my Father. And your Father too. We’re on another level now, we are all his children.
How true the words are
My beloved husband turned me onto this amazing poet, songwriter, singer and I am forever grateful for that. Mr. Cohen died 2 years after my husband….I miss them both terribly. But will love them forever! ❤❤
Surprisingly, i like to listen to this while I'm stoned
I remember hearing this song on the radio, it stopped me in my tracks. I just stood there, mesmerized…
1979 habe ich diesen Song in Köln, bei Saturn, für meine Birgitt gesucht, aber leider nicht gefunden. Ich liebe beide bis heute 💔

Coen's best. So much like late Beatles ❤️
He looks like Al Pachino.
This song is why I flunked out of my first semester at San Diego Mesa Community College back in 1967. I would sit in my 1965 VW camper in the school parking lot and just play this song over and over and over again on my guitar and sing it a hundred times and do that day after day and NEVER get to class. But also — no one ever told me what a GPA was and how Fs and Incompletes could follow me for a long time. Sigh. At least I got really good at playing guitar. And eventually, in 1980, on my own tuition sweat, and after years on the road playing music across the country, I got that working BS degree. I've always loved Leonard Cohen. And cheers to Montreal! Such incredibly great music and art has come out of that city! And thanks to The Heritage in Mission Beach that was a mother to me.
