Recently, MenaRD was criticized for voicing concerns about “street fighter 6 being scrubby”. Daigo responds to this and tells us how he thinks, and somehow, first to 2 vs. first to 3 discourse is back.

Probably should've mentioned in the video, I personally don't think SF6 is "scrubby". I do think drive rush is hard to contest, but it is what it is!
The game is absolutely volatile, which I can also get being a bit frustrated about sometimes since one mistake can absolutely cost you (happens to me a lot so far) but I do not think that "scrubby" is the same as "volatile" at all and I really wish that if Mena just wanted to say the game is volatile then they'd learn the right words first or phrase it to something closer to what they wanted to say instead of immediately jumping to inflammatory language, be it in English or otherwise
I'm gonna tell you right now that you don't know how good you have it, leagues are the most boring shit to watch ever and this region locked shit made everyone except asia dogshit in league and starcraft. Could there be other tournement formats? Ofcourse redbull kumite exists and it would be cool to have more like that but god do not bring the fucking scourge that is only leagues to our neck of the woods.
Look at UMV3. It's been first to 3 for years and it still goes quickly sometimes. I'd love to see more FT5.
Even your doggo agree with that topic.
It's been a while, but the SFV ladder-based online tournament from an old video had a really interesting format, i liked watching the ladder shift around until the top 8 finishes in a traditional tournament bracket.
And as for scrubby, it really does suck when the opponent beats you in a way that "shouldn't have" worked. But i think that it happens to each street fighter game, to new editions, to new balance patches. Street fighter four got the simplified shoryuken motion, which is most definitely catering to new players, and yet competitively four still saw some of the most skilled players in the world dominate.
Fantastic video, thank you for making it. The psychology behind fighting games in general is part of why I love them but the examination of the criteria behind what we define as valuable tests of skill (tournaments) and why we define them that way (to find the best players period, or just the best at adapting quickly) is fascinating and something rarely considered in the zeitgeist. For the record, I would love a top 8 that was set first to 10, but I recognize that may alienate some viewers. Tournament Organizers who can innovate and bridge these gaps have an opportunity to make Street Fighter as legitimized a competitive spectator sport as anything in the NFL or NBA, in my opinion.
Sf6 is objectively scrubby, that doesn’t make it a bad game though. It did exactly what it set out to do which is appeal to a broader audience.
come on, we all saw politics, this kind critique is the kind that has no construction in it.
I'm gonna be completely honest, I think youtubers/streamers/pro players are so far removed from the actual beginner community that they can't speak for us anymore for the most part. I've put about 200 hours into the game and I always have a mindset on improving and learning, yet someone can come in press random buttons and blow up my strategy and skill I put a couple hundred hours into doesn't feel good and I don't think it should be able to happen. Like saying modern barely helps…. that's an entire fraction of gameplay you don't have to practice/learn so you can put your time/energy into learning the actual nature of fgs.
what the hell does scrubby even mean? I don't even get what is being said. Must be me getting old.
One button parry, one button answer to most things and turn the tide (DI), and modern C options. I mean yes it certainly is designed in a way to allow new players to be able to compete. The ceiling is lower than say SF4 but it's still a ceiling 99% of us casuals still can't reach. I mean SF4 would've been considered to have the highest ceiling but then there's "plinking" involved so… regardless of his emotions when he said it, he is not wrong. But I don't really care that pros consider it "scrubby", I still think it is the most fun and polished on release. Maybe alpha was more fun but that's due to having a way bigger roster.
I think the scrubby sentiment goes hand to hand with how to format is. If a game feels scrubby and you only have 2 very short games to adapt to gimmicks, the "scrubbiness" of the game feels even more prominent than in a longer set.
There's something that needs to also be said. We kinda have to stop taking the words of every pro as gospel personally. Just cause someone is a pro player, it doesn't mean they're immune to error. Something I've also noticed is that some pros criticise this game ONLY because new players with the potential of being a pro are slowly popping up and these criticisms may stem from their fear of being toppled by newer players. For every person that thinks it's "scrubby" there are ten more who think it's good and are slowly climbing up the ranks getting ready to take on the pros. I could be wrong, but just some food for thought.
Edit: This is more so in response to Mena. I actually agree with Brian and some of Diago's points, especially around tournament setups, etc.
Menard was just 🧂 SF6 is a good game
I think the downplaying of mena compared to someone like daigo is literally mostly aesthetic. People like the japanese bedroom sage more
More like sometimes it's the timing of when you say it. Hypothetical scenario: You have a big mouth and a subtle-not-subtle disposition where you disparage every other competitor—I mean, that's fine; not everyone has to be humble, gentlemanly or even polite. But then you get exposRD in a grand finals. If you pick that precise juncture to all but outright state it's the game's fault you lost, then yeah! You're gonna be called out on it! Pikachu could scarcely be more surprised by that outcome.
What do we think about 3 rounds per game instead of first to 3? Three rounds per game is unheard of in Street Fighter I'm pretty sure but maybe it's worth trying out.
When sf6 first came out, it was the ultimate fighting game… now it’s scurby. There is no multiplayer game on earth that has came out in this shity social media era that hasn’t been complained about
I kind of agree that sf6 has been focused more on trying to make it more accessible for casual players. I probably enjoyed SFV more and think the neutral was more fun.
Hitxbox/cheatbox is scrubby.
Insane for MenaRD to talk like this given that the thing that he's very good at, and arguably a big element of his two wins, is finding extremely effective "cheap" tactics. Iirc his sfv capcom cup win was in year 1 of the game too, right? Not that he can't do what's effective even if he doesn't like it, but it is so strange to see a guy up blanka ball his way to victory and then be like "drive rush is Cheap :(" lol
Good. I’m a scrub and love my fast green shit
Modern controls were an absolute game changer for me.
I’ve loved fighting games forever, but separating the input issues from actually fighting let me finally enjoy the game.
MenaRD simply hasn't earned the hearts of the people, despite the great results. He may be the best SF6 player in the world so far, but Daigo is the people's champion and has earned that love and respect over decades now. It also helps that Daigo is humble, whereas MenaRD is being seen as a sore loser with that single quote, whether he's right or not.
i can accept daigos take more not because he is somehow more "respected" in the FGC, it's because he took a more neutral apporach at bringing his point across insted of throwing salty manchildren insults around. Could be the difference in age and wisdom but using inflammatory language will always yield opposition even if the take maybe holds some merit, but i stand with my point that just because you are a successful pro doesent mean you can't have shit takes and just because daigo seems to support this sentiment doesent change this suddenly, just because a game has strong offensive options doesent make it scrubby automatically.
Brian, I like how you always look at things from both sides.
SF6 is fast paced enough to have FT3.
They could probably use FT5 for Top 8.
I feel I must say, that I really like the way that you speak—you're very reasonable and capable of acknowledging different perspectives, all while understanding the meaning and value of what people may or may not be trying to say while simultaneously being expressly clear of the potential nuances that could be present—your ability to talk in such a way is definitely a blessing to yourself and others. God bless you—! ( ´◡‿◡`)✧
ーAlso very True: Twitter—not the best place to discuss negativity; unfortunately what people see as most accessible though… (´—‿—`;)
If leagues were a thing, Arslan Ash wouldnt exist and the FGC wouldnt be as diverse as it is.
The FGC's core appeal is that if you can show up, you can walk away with the win.
That's why even Daigo's planned tourney is still open enroll, and many people still consider Evo a bigger prize than Capcom Cup.
I think the problem with what mena said is the wording. If he just said he thinks drive rush is too strong or something it wouldnt have gotten the same blowback but because he called it scrubby everyone was just pointing out people over the years saying x game back in my day wasnt scrubby like this new game when in reality that's not true either
So how about FT5 and make it single elimination and finals are FT10
Am I alone in thinking SF6 plays better with 5 round games. Gives low-tier characters like Jamie a chance, same with my Manon current main, getting 5 golds in 3 rounds is a push against better players. I’d love to see a tournament have best of 3 games, but 5 round games.
Idk maybe going abit of the tekken route keep FT3 but 3 round match maybe
Sheep and shills..
There's no way Daigo doesn't know what scrubby means. Even if he doesn't really speak English very well, he's been around the American FGC for so long that the words 'scrub' and 'free' have to be pretty ingrained in him by now.
It’s incredible your language as a top player to some of these guys, you are a class act more people should be like this
Evo needs to expand it's day count. It's needed to for a while, this years entry surge screams that it needs to go to 4-5 days.
I assumed what Daigo meant there was that SF6 has easy to do nonsense that is hard to deal with that gets you wins in short sets (which is fun for new players) but that it functions well in longer sets when you can contextualise how your opponent uses that stuff and work round it? Kind of like "yeah people gonna do the same easy shit that gets them wins in short sets but that's not an issue with the game's deep structure"
