新星キャサリン・ランガイア、大いなる旅の始まり

オーストラリアの国民的教育番組で親しまれた俳優ジェイ・ランガイアを父に持ち、9人兄弟姉妹というにぎやかで歌と踊りに溢れた大家族の中で育ったキャサリン。

彼女は、フローズンヨーグルト（チョコとマンゴー味が定番！）が大好きな、驚くほどチャーミングで等身大の19歳だ。幼少期にアニメーション版のモアナを見て「私と同じ巻き毛で褐色の肌、同じ扁平足のヒロインがいる」と、自身のルーツへの誇りを胸に育った少女は、3万2000人以上が挑んだ世界オーディションで見事その座を射止めた。

ニューヨークでの最終選考で、歌の審査中にプレッシャーからトイレに駆け込んで「人生最大のチャンスを逃した」と大泣きしたエピソードや、合格の直報を学校の水泳大会の最中に受け「人生最高の知らせの後に背泳ぎのリレーを走らされた（笑）」と振り返るなど、ユーモアのセンスも抜群。撮影初日には朝6時に高校の模擬試験をリモートで受けてからスタジオ入りしたという、地に足のついた努力家でもある。

ディズニーの超大作で華々しいデビューを飾る彼女だが、すでにその視線は未来を見据えている。早くも次回作として、オーストラリアの森の中で撮影された風刺ホラー映画『クラッシュアウト（原題：Crash Out）』の撮影を終えたばかり。「『モアナ』とは正反対の、世慣れたティーンエイジャーの役に夢中になった」と海外インタビューで語った彼女の言葉通り、今後はディズニー・ヒロインの枠に留まらない、幅広い演技派女優としての躍進が期待されている。

モアナ役として、世界中からの称賛も批判も引き受ける覚悟を決めた彼女。その真摯な姿勢を見せる新星の、大いなる旅はまだ始まったばかりだ。

１）迷惑電話かと思ったら…!? ドウェインからのサプライズ

キャスティングの過程で、キャサリンの元に届いたある音声メッセージ。彼女は米「E! News」のインタビューで「アメリカの番号からで、最初は迷惑電話だと思った（笑）」とお茶目に明かす。しかし、再生すると聞こえてきたのはあの“超有名な声”。「『アロハ、ケイティ！（キャサリンの愛称）』って、ドウェインからのメッセージだったんです！『そんなはずない！』って大興奮しました」と振り返る。親しみやすく温かいウェルカムメッセージは、未知の映画界へ飛び込む彼女の緊張を優しく溶かし、これから始まる挑戦への大きな心の支えとなった。

２）「彼女こそ本物のモアナ」ドウェインが最前列で目撃した感動

撮影中、ドウェインが今も忘れられない特別な瞬間があった。撮影終了後、セットにいた幼い子供たちがキャサリンを見上げ、彼女に夢中になっていた姿だ。ドウェインは米「Rotten Tomatoes」のインタビューで「彼女がモアナになりきる姿を『最高の最前列席』で見られたことは感動的だった」と回想し、「子供たちにとって、今目の前にいるキャサリンこそが本物のモアナなんだと改めて気づかされたよ」と語る。トップスターである彼が優しい眼差しで「君が本物だ」と認めてくれたことは、彼女の大きな原動力となった。

３）先代モアナから受け取った、未来へ漕ぎ出すための“バトン”

マウイはドウェインのルーツであるサモアの祖父への敬意を体現した役。だからこそ彼は米「Billboard」誌のインタビューで「彼女はまるで自分の娘のよう。優雅さと威厳をもってサモア流に演じきった」とキャサリンを深い愛で見守り、最大の賛辞を送っている。さらに彼女を喜ばせたのは、アニメーション版でモアナを演じたアウリイ・クラヴァーリョから届いた、愛の詰まった激励メールだ。キャサリンは米「E! News」の取材に対し「先代からの温かい祝福をもらえたことでパズルのピースが揃い、前に進む勇気をもらえた」と語っている。

４）新旧モアナが歌声で紡ぐ、奇跡の“音楽の会話”

エンドクレジットを彩るのは、名匠リン＝マニュエル・ミランダ書き下ろしの新曲「Along The Way」だ。キャサリン、ドウェイン、アウリイの3人が抜群の歌唱力で声を重ねる豪華コラボ楽曲となっている。キャサリンは米「Billboard」誌のインタビューで、母から新曲の話を聞かされ「ママ、新曲なんて作らないわよ（笑）」と最初は信じられなかった舞台裏を回想。しかし、ふたりの圧倒的な歌声とハーモニーを聴いたドウェインは一瞬で虜になった。同誌で「新旧モアナが音楽的な会話をしているようだ」と語る彼の執念通り、エンディングへと繋ぐ見事な架け橋として採用された。
