1947年9月21日アメリカのメイン州ポートランド生れ。2歳の時に父親が突然失踪し、母親一人の手で育てられた。メイン大学時代は教員の資格を目指しながら雑誌に小説を投稿。70年に卒業し、翌年妻タビサと結婚するも、教師の働き口が見つからずアルバイトもしながら執筆活動を続けて、地元高校の教師として雇用された。
74年に処女作「キャリー」が出版されデビュー、76年には同作が映画化され大ヒット。一躍注目の新人作家になり、続いて「呪われた町」「デッド・ゾーン」などの話題作を次々発表してベストセラー作家となり、これらも映像化され人気を呼んだ。アメリカの架空の地方都市を舞台にディテールにこだわる描写など独特の文章で“モダン・ホラーの帝王”とも呼ばれるように。
現在までに多数の小説を執筆して世界幻想文学大賞などを受賞。代表作には「シャイニング」「IT」「グリーン・マイル」などがあり、そのほとんどがハリウッドで映像化。時に自作を監督もしたり、カメオ出演も多く、映画界との半世紀に及ぶ関係性は好調。

【 執筆スタイル 】
書斎に電話、テレビやゲーム機など気の散るものは置かない。窓はカーテンを引きブラインドをおろすが、音楽を大音量で鳴らしながら作業する。“メタリカ”、“ガンズ・アンド・ローゼズ”などヘビメタ、ハードロックの方が集中できるのだそう。

76年から住んでいたメイン州バンゴーのスティーヴン・キング邸は現在、キング夫妻が創設したスティーヴン＆タビサ・キング財団の活動拠点となっている。一般公開されていないがファンが訪れる名所である。「IT」の舞台となる架空の町デリーはバンゴーがモデル。
【 ボツ寸前だった処女作 】
プロデビュー作となった「キャリー」の原稿を書き始めたころ、気に入らず一度はごみ箱に捨てたが、それを拾った夫人が続きを書くように促した。
【 依存症だった時期 】
デビューした後、重度のアルコールや麻薬の依存症になった時期も。そのピークだった頃「クージョ」を書いたが、本人はどう書いたか記憶がないという。

【 交通事故 】
1999年、散歩中にミニバンに後ろから轢かれるという不運に見舞われた。ヘリで病院に運ばれ命拾い。作家復帰を危ぶまれたが運よく快復。
