I haven’t read the original work.
The way Ayane Tosaka, played by Meru Nukumi,
moves the story forward with her singing
felt so natural,
and at the same time,
the way Haruto Mizushima gets drawn in
also came across naturally.
Especially the scene where they meet—
the moment Ayane immediately puts a melody
to the poem Haruto created and sings it
was wonderful as an introduction.
Meru Nukumi’s singing was genuinely excellent,
and the way a young person with hidden talent
gradually gains skill
and rises upward
had tremendous persuasive power.
In Unknown Girlfriend, released in 2025,
the singer milet starred in the lead role
after studying acting for nearly a year.
milet was wonderful at that time,
and I had wondered
whether the reverse
(could someone who is not a singer sing well?)
was even possible.
But this time, seeing Meru Nukumi, I was overwhelmed.
In overseas films,
I often see actors seriously taking on singing,
and being overwhelming at it,
but it made me happy to see
that in Japan too, among the younger generation,
a work like this can be made.
(When I looked it up, it turns out it’s the same director—no wonder.)
Also impossible to overlook
is how Haruto, played by Shunsuke Michieda,
is not someone who willingly stands in front of others,
and the way he embodies
a boy who lacks confidence somewhere inside
felt so real and delicate.
Even his smallest expressions were excellent,
and they made the contrast
with Ayane Tosaka, played by Meru Nukumi,
stand out all the more.
The trailer hardly conveys
the good parts of this work,
for better or worse.
It was a very good film—highly recommended.
