高度な専門知識と鋭い観察力をあわせ持つ法医病理学者ケイ・スカーペッタ（キッドマン）は故郷に戻り、連続殺人事件の被害者の“声”になろうと犯人を追う。同時に彼女は28年前に自身のキャリアを決定づけた事件が、自身の破滅を招くものではないことを証明しようとする。物語は新たな事件を調べるスカーペッタと1990年代後半、若き主任検屍官だった彼女、両方の姿を交錯させて描く。
スカーペットが姉ドロシー（カーティス）やその娘ルーシー（デボーズ）、刑事のピート（現在をボビー・カナヴェイル、若かりし日をその息子ジェイクが演じる）、FBIプロファイラーのベントン（ベイカー）らとおりなすドラマも見もの。バージニア州などを舞台にしてスケールも壮大だ。

スタッフも充実。製作会社のひとつは『ファイブ・ナイツ・アット・フレディーズ』などホラーを得意とする映画会社ブラムハウスのTV部門。企画と脚本を担当するのは「LOST」「アルカトラズ」などに参加してきた脚本家エリザベス・サーノフ。復活版「ハロウィン」シリーズのデイヴィッド・ゴードン・グリーンが5エピソードを監督。

鬼才ライアン・マーフィーが製作総指揮を務める、異色の実話ドラマ。父親が暗殺されたジョン・F・ケネディ・ジュニア（ポール・アンソニー・ケリー）はカルバン・クライン社で働くキャロリン（サラ・ピジョン）と出会う。ナオミ・ワッツらが共演。
