イ・ビョンホンが長編映画では25年ぶりにパク・チャヌク監督とタッグ
『オールド・ボーイ』（03）でカンヌ国際映画祭グランプリ、『別れる決心』（22）で同映画祭監督賞を受賞するなど、韓国映画の新たな地平を切り拓く衝撃作を発表し続けてきた巨匠パク・チャヌク監督。その最新作は、現代社会に生きる誰もが直面し得る“突然の解雇”という現実を独自の視点で捉え、家族ドラマ、スリラー、ブラックユーモアといった様々な要素を交えて描く就活サバイバル・エンターテインメント。アメリカの犯罪小説の名手ドナルド・E・ウェストレイクの「斧」を原作に、リストラによって幸せの絶頂から突き落とされ、再就職もうまくいかない主人公の常軌を逸した行動を描く。
第50回トロント国際映画祭で国際観客賞を受賞し、第83回ゴールデングローブ賞ではミュージカル・コメディ部門の作品賞、主演男優賞、非英語作品賞の3部門でノミネートを果たした。『パラサイト 半地下の家族』と同じ気鋭の配給会社NEONが北米配給権を獲得したことも話題に。
主人公マンス役を演じるのは「イカゲーム」のイ・ビョンホン。長編映画では『JSA』以来25年ぶりとなったパク・チャヌク監督とのタッグで新境地を開拓し、ゴールデングローブ賞で映画部門では韓国人初となる主演男優賞にノミネートを果たした。イ・ビョンホンと夫婦を演じるのは「愛の不時着」のソン・イェジン。結婚、出産を経て満を持しての復帰作となった本作で“韓国のオスカー”と称される青龍映画賞主演女優賞を受賞した。さらにマンスのライバル役に扮するイ・ソンミンも同賞で助演男優賞を受賞。ほかにも『警官の血』のパク・ヒスンら実力派キャストが物語に厚みを加えている。
原作「斧」とは?
この映画の元になったのは、アメリカの作家ドナルド・E・ウェストレイクが書いた小説「斧」（1997年刊）。「仕事を失う怖さ」や「追い詰められた人間の心理」をリアルに描いたこの物語は、アメリカだけでなく世界中で高く評価された。2005年には名匠コスタ＝ガヴラスによってフランスでも映画化され、そちらも名作として知られている。本作で舞台を韓国に置き換えた監督は、この原作を大胆にアレンジ。グローバル化の波や、AIと人の労働力の関係など、現代ならではのテーマも巧みに忍ばせている。
ストーリー
リストラですべてを失った男が衝撃的な計画を決行する

製紙会社で管理職を務めるマンス（イ・ビョンホン）は、妻ミリ（ソン・イェジン）と2人の子ども、2匹の犬とともに、郊外の大きな家で絵に描いたような幸せな人生を送っていた。だがその理想的な生活は唐突に終わりを告げる。会社の買収劇に伴うリストラにより、25年間尽くしてきた会社を解雇されてしまったのだ。
マイホームも手放す危機に陥った主人公が閃いた“衝撃のアイデア”とは？
再就職活動は難航を極め、退職金を切り崩す日々が続く。妻のミリもパートに出るが、生活は困窮し、ついに愛着あるマイホームさえ手放す危機に瀕する。追い詰められたマンスは、藁をもつかむ思いで好調な製紙会社へ履歴書を持ち込み直談判に向かうが、責任者のソンチュル（パク・ヒスン）から屈辱的な扱いを受ける。絶望の淵に立たされたそのとき、彼の脳裏をある恐ろしい考えが支配する。それは「ライバルを消せば、仕事は自分のものになる」という衝撃的な計画だった。
