2026年5月4日（現地時間）に、メトロポリタン美術館コスチューム・インスティテュートの特別展覧会「Costume Art」を祝して開催されるメットガラ（MET GALA）。その注目のドレスコードが「Fashion is Art（アートとしてのファッション）」であることが発表された。
メトロポリタン美術館が所蔵する膨大なコレクションには、人間の姿の描写や解釈を通じて、「衣服を纏う身体」を探求する作品が数多くある。「Fashion is Art」は、そんな作品にフォーカスを当てた特別展のテーマ「Costume Art」の理念を十全に反映しており、ファッションデザイナーがいかにして、身体をキャンバスに創作しているかを考えさせるドレスコードだ。

なお、今年の特別展ではグレートホールに隣接する新常設ギャラリー「Condé M. Nast Galleries」を会場に、コスチューム・インスティテュート所蔵の衣服が、約5,000年の時をまたぐ絵画や彫刻など、400点近くの作品とあわせて展示される。
「メットのあらゆるキュレーション部門とギャラリーをつなぐものはファッション──つまり“衣服を纏う身体”です」とコスチューム・インスティテュートのキュレーター・イン・チャージであるアンドリュー・ボルトンは語っている。「それこそが、この美術館全体を貫く一本の糸で、今回の展覧会の出発点になったものです」
