2022年に稼働を開始した〈MEC Industry 鹿児島湧水工場〉は、国産丸太の調達・製材から、CLTなどの建築資材の加工、新建材や住宅といった製品の製造・販売までを一気通貫で行う総合林業事業会社・MEC Industryの本社拠点でもある木材加工工場である。
今日の地方産業にとって、「働く環境」づくりは重要なテーマであり、とりわけ工場にあっては、かつての就業環境・労働条件のイメージからか、地元からの就職希望者が少ないことが課題となっている。これに対し、当工場においては、働く人の観点に立った一連の環境づくりにより「地域から愛される工場とすること」が目指された。これは、企業の競争力を高めるだけでなく、魅力ある就業環境による安定した雇用の創出、地場の林業の振興といった地域全体の活性化にも繋がる、地方における地域と工場の新しい共生のあり方を示すものとなった。
一般の工場では、「自社製品の実際の使われ方」を知る機会がなく、製造に特化した施設となることも多い。本工場では、自社で製造するCLTや、木板と鉄筋トラス付き鋼製デッキを組み合わせた型枠材兼仕上げ材「MIデッキ」などの自社製品を髄所に用いることで、働く人々が自ら製造に携わる製品を日常的に体感できるデザインとした。
また、広大な工場では多職種の社員が広範囲に点在して作業するため、チームの一体感が生まれづらい状況がある。そこで、すべての社員が利用する動線を集約した「木の道」を計画し、その道沿いに事務所や食堂を配置することで、自然に顔を合わせられる関係性をつくり出した。
この動線の中心となるのは大階段のある吹き抜け空間である。多面体構成の大壁面へ使用した杉の無垢板材、スチール手摺りに編み込むように取り付けた化粧角材、トップライトから柔らかく光を取り入れる木ルーバーなど、多様な木製品を1つの空間に統合した。社員全員が日常動線として使用するこの空間が、社の理念を体現する象徴的空間となっている。夜間には内部照明により木質空間が浮かび上がり、「木の道」そのものが工場全体を照らす照明として機能する。
三菱地所設計とMEC Industryが所属する三菱地所グループは、木の可能性を追求しながら、新しい価値を生み出し、社会をよりよい方向に変えていくための木造・木質事業を幅広く展開している。〈MEC Industry 鹿児島湧水工場〉は、その実践を支える拠点として、今後の取り組みにおける中核的な役割を担っている。

“MEC Industry Kagoshima Yusui Factory,” which began operations in 2022, is a wood processing facility that also serves as the headquarters for MEC Industry. This comprehensive forestry company handles everything from sourcing and milling domestic logs to processing building materials like CLT and manufacturing and selling new building materials and housing.
Creating a “working environment” is an essential theme for today’s local industries, and the factory in particular faces the problem of a lack of job applicants from the local area, perhaps due to the image of the working environment and working conditions that existed in the past. In response to this issue, the factory aimed to “become a factory that is loved by the local community” by creating a series of environments from the workers’ perspective. This will increase the company’s competitiveness and lead to the creation of stable employment in an attractive working environment and the revitalization of the entire region through the promotion of the local forestry industry, demonstrating a new way of coexistence between the area and the factory.
Ordinary factories do not have the opportunity to learn about “how their products are used,” and often specialize in manufacturing. This factory incorporates our own products throughout its design, including the CLT we manufacture and the “MI Deck”—a formwork and finishing material that combines wood panels with steel decks, featuring reinforced steel trusses. This allows workers to experience the very products they help create daily.
In addition, the sprawling factory has employees from many different professions working in widely scattered locations, making it challenging to create a sense of team unity. Therefore, a “wooden road” was planned to integrate the flow lines used by all employees, and by locating the offices and cafeteria along this path, a relationship was created that allows employees to naturally meet each other.
The center of this flow line is the atrium space with a grand staircase. Various wood products were integrated into one space, including solid cedar planks for the large polyhedral walls, decorative square timbers woven into the steel handrail, and wooden louvers that let in soft light from the top light. This space, which all employees use as a daily flow line, has become a symbolic space that embodies the company’s philosophy. At night, the wooden space is illuminated by internal lighting, and the “wooden road” functions as lighting for the entire factory.
The Mitsubishi Estate Group, to which Mitsubishi Jisho Design and MEC Industry belong, is broadly developing wood- and wood-based businesses to unlock the potential of wood, create new value, and improve society. “MEC Industry Kagoshima Yusui Factory” serves as a base supporting this practice and plays a central role in future initiatives.
