映画『スマッシング・マシーン』レビュー – 今日何を壊すんだ…ちょっと待って…

All right, I know I’m late to the party with this one. Guilty is charged. I had to take a break and like, you know, try to watch some other stuff, but The Smashing Machine, I finally got a chance to see it. And this is a great movie for me. [Music] Chase Lehi here with the Blue Futon reviewing The Smashing Machine. So, it’s about pretty simple premise. We’re following Mr. Kur around who is kind of the pioneer of bringing UFC or MMA to the states. However, before doing that, it had to happen in Japan, Brazil, other countries to get his stardom going. And this is the downfall, the uphill battles, the downhill battles, the drugs, the wife issues going on during this specific time period of his life because he is a true guy. And I think breaking the fourth wall at the very end of the film is pretty pretty fun. But what did I like about this film? a lot. I mean, the look, the feel, the acting, the sets, just the overall gravitas of this film really sucked me in for where the story is going to go. Cuz as a person who doesn’t know a lot about UFC or MMA, like I’ve tried to watch a couple fights, it’s just not for me, per se. If it’s for other people, that’s fine. But for me, I just don’t find pleasure in people beating each other up like that. It’s just not for me. But anyway, talking about this movie though, Dwayne Johnson and Emily Emily Blunt. Wow, I had I was going to say Emma Blunt is fantastic in this movie. They’re both really, really damn good. And if it was my choice, I would probably nominate them for Oscars, but with where this category is right now, I just don’t think it’s going to happen. Plus, only making six million at the box office really isn’t the greatest for I think a $50 million production budget. So, it’s really, really a bummer. Uh, so the acting overall is pretty good. Even the co-acctors and co-actresses do a fantastic job in this movie. The look of the film, you truly feel it’s in this time period. I don’t know if it’s the uh grain they use while they’re filming or the filters or the lenses that they’re using, but it was like this is a it’s very hard like with some other movies to go back in time. Let’s go to the nearest one that did happen. It’s not a quote unquote, you know, real story, but one battle after another, how it’s like 15 years later, but when you look at the past, it’s kind of the same camera. It’s the same look from 15 years to now. Here you see a clear difference of like when we’re looking at Mr. Kerr now, which we do in the beginning and then throughout this time period, it’s just a completely different looking film. And that’s like that is really fresh and awesome to like actually have that distinguished look to it. Uh the makeup is really good with The Rock as well. Like there are some scenes like when he’s older in life where you’re like, “Whoa, that is harder to tell who he is, especially what is occurring in the final fight. Like there is a transformation period, which it does feel like it is. It’s harder and harder to see Dwayne Johnson in that makeup of who he really is.” Uh I think how it’s written is really good because it’s one of those ones where it really doesn’t treat anyone like they’re the hero in this movie. They all have flaws. They all have issues. And I think that is I think some people might not like that of the whole broken household and how there might not ever be a happy ending. And I hate to say it. People might not like that cuz they want that happy ending, but that’s the truth. Especially I’m trying to write a script about things that happened in my past with my sister. And it’s not a good script. not like writing wise, but it doesn’t really treat that many people correctly, but it’s all true stuff that did occur. And so when you have that, you’re just like, “Ah, that’s not true.” It is. Not everything’s like 50/50 where it’s like, you know, happy golucky even though cancer’s in the background. This is the same way. Even though you have the fighting in the background and a lot of people are having fun, this person isn’t. This girl isn’t. And it’s a downhill spiral of regret and just decision making, right? And this is also one where like whose side do you take? Do you take Emily’s blunt side when all this is happening or Dwayne the Rock’s side when all this is happening? Because there are choices in this movie where you’re like, “Yep, she’s right. Yep, he’s wrong. Yep, he’s right. Yep, she’s wrong.” So that constant back and forth really doesn’t pit the audience against one member. And I think that’s a true positive thing with film making with the safy bro one of them cuz the other one did Marty Supreme and I’m waiting for that one to come out but from that from what I’m hearing that might be my best movie of the year in my opinion but who knows we’ll see when that comes out during the Christmas time frame but we don’t have that just yet. All right. So then what else about this movie? The production design, the cinematography. Like I said, I really love how this movie looks. I think that’s one of the better things about this movie is just the look of it and just the weird scenarios in this film that you don’t think would be in this film like the cactus or the carnival or other things cuz you do expect like fights to be in this movie like you know physical fights of the MMA. you expect a, you know, a montage of getting back into shape, you know, the drugs scene because I mean it seems like even though it might sound cliche when you do talk to like actors, musicians, sports people, drugs are like the number one catalyst of making someone go downhill through it and throughout. All right, and the song choices, awesome. Give me some Elvis in any movie and I’m happy. And this has some very very good song choices and it’s not the one I love songs that play out right when you have a play out song during a whole period that just proves that when writing the script you had a vision of like mixing sound, you know, score and having it play out in a specific reason. I do think that works extremely well as well. uh negatives. I guess you could say that you wish there was a little bit more substance if you know what I mean of like what things did occur behind the scenes of maybe with some other fighters especially in the Japan scene. But I do like that we are getting like a true like people from Japan are asking questions and we’re getting the dialogue information and we’re getting like him as a person where is he a different person from in the ring and outside the ring especially when talking to the Japanese about his head. I thought that was pretty funny. And getting the actual um relationship with the fighters out of the ring and before the ring of going in is pretty remarkable. It’s almost like the ironclaw where you know that it’s kind of a job and you’re not supposed to take it personally. Of course, there might be grudges here and there, but it’s all in a day’s work. It’s kind of freaking wild. So, overall, The Smashing Machine, I really enjoy this one. This is going to be probably a top 25 movie for me. It’s kind of crazy. The day I watched this, I watched Kiss of Spiderwoman and that’s gonna be a bottom 25. It’s probably gonna be a bottom 10 for me. I really hated that film for everything. But hey, what am who am I? Who am I to say? But Smash Machine, I highly recommend this one. So, The Smashing Machine will receive a 4 and a half out of five futons, which equals that 90%. So, let’s see who the critics and scores gave this one. Critics a 72% with two third uh 80 63 audience score 77 over 500 critic consensus. Dwayne Johnson goes the distance with his transformation turn as Mark Kerr and the smashing machine. A gritty biopic that sidesteps cliches even at the expense of the narrative satisfaction while still landing the dramatic body blows that counts. Like I said, I do like the the cliches are kind of sidestepped through this movie. But anyway, Mark Kerr. I always say car because of the basketball player because I really don’t. He’s not a good coach. Anyway, Mark Kerr. Uh, so there we go. 777290. Chase with the blue futon. Like, comment, subscribe. One more. Bontopia. You for Tony. Thank you for watching. Have a great day. I don’t care what day tomorrow, a week from now, a month from now, a year from now. I love every single freaking one of you. Peace and love. Peace and love. And who are you smashing in that machine?
