My entire body was in pain every day. By far the biggest project
I’ve been part of and also the most demanding. Kento Kaku Introduces Ryuji I’m Kento Kaku and I was cast as Ryuji
in Alice in Borderland Season 3. Ryuji isn’t a character in the manga. He’s an Alice in Borderland
Season 3 original character. He’s an assistant professor
who’s very interested in the afterlife. He learns about Borderland
while researching the meteorite incident… …and gets even more interested
in the afterlife. As a result, he completely ignores
any possibility of dying when he decides to enter
Borderland of his own accord. So, Ryuji’s reason
for going to Borderland. Ryuji was always interested
in the afterlife. He’s conducting his research at
the college, but his work gets dismissed. That’s when an incident occurs due to having met
a certain person in the past. That incident was the catalyst that turns his interest in the afterlife
into an obsession. That’s when he finally gets a lead. He realizes he has a chance… …to go to the afterlife. That’s how this season begins. Then he gets invited by the citizen Banda and naturally enters Borderland. Welcome to Borderland. What are Ryuji’s strengths and weaknesses
in Borderland? You can see it in games
like the first one, Old Maid. Or Runaway Train. You’ll see in these two games that Ryuji
is a very calm and composed person. Then, as you watch the show,
especially in the beginning, you’ll also see that,
unlike Arisu and Usagi, he uses people as shields
to protect his life. He can be very coldhearted. On the other hand, he has his own beliefs. He and Usagi have
very different personalities, but they can understand each other
in some ways. Their bond grows little by little
through the games. If the canary dies from the gas, we’ll know it’s poison. Also, because of an injury
he had in the past, Ryuji is wheelchair-bound. For me, filming those games
in a wheelchair, while staying in character,
was incredibly difficult. He has a handicap
that’s never been seen on the show. Playing for life or death
while in a wheelchair is a huge handicap to have. But it’s worthwhile
to watch him fight to survive using his superhuman-like
physical strength and mental fortitude. What was it like being a part of
Alice in Borderland Season 3? As an actual fan of Seasons 1 and 2 myself, I was always curious
how those exciting shots were filmed. And being cast in Season 3
and setting foot on set, I was blown away by the
massive scale of the production. It was like a theme park. By far the biggest project
I’ve been part of and also the most demanding, so it was an amazing experience. How did you prepare for the role? They gave me a lot of time to prepare
for my role before we started shooting. I spent a long time practicing
how to use a wheelchair. Ryuji is a character that has been
in a wheelchair for years, so I tried to get
as familiar with it as I could. I stayed in the wheelchair
as much as possible, both on and off the set,
practicing how to roll over steps. I’d practice lifting the front wheels
and rolling up over the small steps. As I kept doing that,
I got used to using a wheelchair. But shooting those game scenes
in a wheelchair, especially getting the timing right
to dodge the laser beams, was hard. I had to use turning techniques
and even people to pivot, or perform an action while propelling
the wheelchair forward. There were many tough scenes. My entire body was in pain every day. It was completely different from
all the action scenes I’ve ever done. Especially since I had to move my body
with just my arms, so it felt like only the muscles here
got bigger and bigger as we filmed. But it was a very good experience. Do you have a message for international fans of Alice in Borderland? First of all, thank you so much for
being a long-lasting fan of the series. I hope you like
the new character “Ryuji” and also the exciting story
of this new season. I personally think the scale is
bigger than ever. So… We had so much fun filming this so I really hope you guys enjoy. If you want to see more of
