Kreisler: Syncopation【Violin Performance】｜Eimi Wakui
“Syncopation” composed by F. Kreisler (1875-1962) is a work for violin and piano, published in 1925.
Syncopation is a technique that changes the music by inverting the rhythm of the normal strong and weak beats and emphasizing the backbeat by placing an accent on the originally weak beat. By placing this technique here and there throughout the piece, the rhythmic emphasis and light melody are expressed in an unconventional manner. The work is a clever manipulation of tension and release in music, and one senses that he intended to deepen the musical expression and at the same time bring a new musical experience to the audience.
Syncopation deliberately betrays beat expectation, so the performer needs to catch the timing precisely and integrate the rhythmic tension naturally into the flow of the music. In addition, there are many situations where melody and rhythm are emphasized alternately, requiring the performer to keep the balance of each part in mind.
This video was performed as the last piece of the concert at the former Maeda Marquis’ residence this spring.
