Thank you all.
I thought the ground catch wrestling is similar to Judo in that you can either submit them or just pin them.
Interesting Chadi. However, Jiu Jitsu have more tools in their belt to deal with grappling for example Finger locks and joints manipulation. Minus kicking and punching would be a great video to see.
You might get a judo throw in nogi, but basic wrestling is still superior to it. Easier to learn, easier to use etc. That is why it is so rarely seen outside of judo. Pinning is very much a thing both in BJJ and wrestling – it is just more realistic and in BJJ it doesn't score anything. Judokas tend to have really shitty guards and it really shows in here.
Judo doesn't have a ground system 😂😂😂, where do you think BJJ came from? BJJ=Basically Just Judo.
Also anyone who day Judo doesn't work without a GI doesn't understand Judo
Also people tend to only think about Japanese Judo , there are so many other styles, each country has its oy style and expression.
Chadi, genuinely love your channel, BUT…
I often disagree with the judo vs the rest polemic. Like here: you neglect to mention that all of Team Judo here are experienced MMA fighters… In Japan, as well as anywhere, a massive part of MMA training is basic nogi BJJ (as distinct from judo newaza).
Also your “no gi makes no difference to effectiveness of judo in grappling” is clearly untrue. Freestyle wrestling is WAY more direct and effective under these conditions…. Judo has its moments but no comparison in nogi.
Before 2006 jiujitsu and judo were taught at the same time……

Always the best judo content
改めて。
柔道の投げは凄い。
しかし、それでも負けないキャッチレスリングの寝技も凄い。
Judo, grappling and the other SPORT MARTIAL ARTS,is so,,,,boring to watch,,,judo looks like two guys grabbing each others clothing and trying to see who can trip who first,,,I remember a time in highschool when a guy who was on the judo wanted to fight me,
( over a girl of course ),, but I remember him facing me and me telling him that I didnt want to fight,,he still wanted to,,,anyways
Were standing there two 175 lb highschool students,he lunged at me grabbed my arm and twisted his body sideways to obviously flip me over his shoulder,,I was clearly stronger then him so when he began moving,SO DID I…so when he twisted his body to flip me and trip me,I tackled him ,,we were on the ground wrestling, till I punched him, twice,,he said alright, alright, alright,,, done ,skirmish over….point is,,,,I was inexperienced In fighting, but he had training!! He was on a team of judo athletes!! And his style was ineffective
Judo only works against, weaker,dumb,scared,people..or on another judo person, because basically they're thinking the same way…judo…..not an effect style in real world situations, it's a sport.
Ordered your book. I enjoyed it a lot.
It is interesting to look at the history – and mythology – of the origins of martial arts.
Quintet was awesome.
Judo sucks
That was a cool event
I appreciate the intellectual honesty of showing judo lose to bjj.
I am a BJJ brown belt who dabbled a bit in Japanese Jujutsu which had more throw based work. I really think Judo is a super power in the feet. I think sport destroyed it just as sport and competition is currently destroying BJJ. We used to not butt scoot, but we had some legit Western takedowns. The problem is both are taught as sport and not Martial Arts anymore which takes away key elements. In the end Judo is Jujutsu and Jujutsu is Judo. We need to marry the two again. One thing I am sure of and that is BJJ nor MMA should never go to Olympics the because it will be destroyed soft European soy boy board directors.
"Catch wrestling"? – Catch wrestling grained attention through Antonio Inoki at UFC 1 and 2. Before "Catcher" was a bad offending word for "Pro Wrestler". Good wrestlers used this word to gain distance to the "Pro Wrestlers" which were considered dubious. Then Inoki achieved a fight against Muhammad Ali – because of the might of Bruce Lee. Inoki wanted to substitute Bruce Lee (who was considered "King of Kung-fu" in analogy to Elvis Presley, the "King of Rock' n Roll" in America which was open to the far east). He was introduced as a "Kung-fu Catcher". However he had never really practiced Kung-fu (Bruce Lee practiced Wing-Chung in Hongkong a bit different from Chinese Wushu style and developed his "Jeet-kune-do", which is a strange word combination). Inoki came from Japan and also in Brazil he didn't practice a clear Budo-sport or Martial art. He claimed to have been a not stated regional champion in Greco Roman or Freestyle wrestling but then no more, instead he claimed to have had success in Brazil in shot put (and discus?).
However he got the fight against Muhammad Ali, which was a great delusion. On the other hand he established a spectacular "Pro Wrestling" world league beginning in Germany and from there to the USA.
This was discriminated as "Catch" by German wrestlers.
But we saw Inoki back with his pretty successful shoot fighters in the prime UFC as a coach, trainer and manager. So "Catch as Catch Can" gained a new reputation as competition in real fight no more in "Pro Wrestling" next to BJJ. Inoki continued after leaving the UFC as a quite successful Brazilian trainer, coach and Manager in K1 with Glaube Feitosa, who practiced the hardest Karate style.
Inoki also reached the Japanese party for the liberal party. This dubious rich business man died a few years ago at the age of 79 in Japan. Nobody really loved him.
Fuck the IOC
Im only on the first match but this just shows you need to be good at everything. Judo is a cheat code for the throwing and ragdolling your opponent on the feet. But if someones better than you at bjj then you gonna have a tough time on the ground
Also im a non judo guy. We have once a week at the gym but coach said i gotta take a back seat on it coz i got injured lol. Anyway i kmow judo is strict rules making a tournament etc. But what if you had your own old rules judo? Or like judo but you call it a different name? Would they be able to block you? Also is it illegal as in the laws of a country to have an unsanctioned judo tournament? Or is it just officially you wont get recognised etc
O judô em comparação ao jiu jitsu brasileiro é cathe wrestling e o mais fraco o jiu-jitsu tem mais variadade
It is absolutely essential that judo competes in these tournaments because it is drawn into real life fights and not the very restrictive and counterproductive olympics and world championships. Judo has so much potential it is beyond any imagination, all it needs is tournaments where's pitted against different disciplines. Edit: I would like to thank you Chadi for your passion for Judo and the work you do for the sport. These discussions only benefits this wonderful discipline and we cannot forget that Judo stands at the very base of every martial discipline that evolved recently.
"style vs style" grappling matches are so much more interesting to watch than MMA matches.
Judo vs ju jitsu….That's illegal in judo, i win. 😂. We should remove all rules and fight to the death. Then we will see who wins.
I hit that first throw the other day in nogi!
Chadi,
Have you see the Michael Pixley vs Nicholas Meregali match? Couple awesome judo throws and even a judo throw to finish it.
I literally saw a greco wrestling match lol
The judo guys were unstoppable standing up.. really good
