The Recitativo and Scherzo Caprice, Op. 6, is a work for unaccompanied violin composed by Fritz Kreisler (1875-1962) in 1911
The piece was intended to push the violin to its technical limits and is regarded as a very challenging piece for violinists.
The recitative is characterised by passionate, dramatic expression and is played in a free-rhythmic, narrative manner. The Scherzo, on the other hand, is light and lively music, marked by quick passages and leaps. Kreisler dedicated this work to the violin master Eugène Ysaÿe.

Superb! I especially like this dazzling little gem. The opening is almost strange, especially followed by such a lighthearted, melidic little romp. Your little turn at the end was so clean and clear and added exactly the little twist as it should. The harmonics were not just clean, but pretty and ringing.
Your bow technique does it all – and I particularly like the smooth lifts in time.
Little touches of rubato are exactly right.
What a delight!
Plenty of virtuosi wrote pieces that tie fingers in knots.
Somehow, Kreisler's pieces sound so relaxed and pretty, but are just as tough.
