To bring his work to life using just an iPhone. Osamu Tezuka… is like a god. [Takashi Miike, Director] Osamu Tezuka… is like a god. Osamu Tezuka… is like a god. He turned manga into a solid category of literature. “You’re nothing but trouble.” Midnight is Tezuka’s hidden masterpiece.
The main character is a taxi driver, who only appears at night. Midnight is a very alluring character. [Kento Kaku, “Midnight”] Midnight is a very alluring character. He’s a hero, but human at the same time. We based the film on an episode where he meets a truck-driver called Kaede.
He just can’t leave her alone and ends up saving her life. With iPhone, we can capture the speed and dynamism expressed in the frames of Tezuka’s manga. I tried to make the film as true to the original drawings as possible. This is the strength of iPhone.
[Nobuyasu Kita, Cinematographer] This is the strength of iPhone. It can allow us to shoot the impossible angles Tezuka imagined. Being filmed by iPhone felt less intimidating. It’s groundbreaking that this device can now zoom to 5x without creating issues for picture quality. [Shooting in Low-Light] As a cinematographer, I’m always conscious of the levels of black. Even in a low-light environment,
IPhone captures people beautifully and keeps all the details. That’s a pretty amazing camera system. [LiDAR Scanner] We wanted to use iPhone for CGI too. [Minoru Tokushige, VFX Producer] We wanted to use iPhone for CGI too. So we decided to use the LiDAR scanner. We scanned every detail of Midnight’s taxi, millimeter by millimeter
And used that as a base for the modeling work. This improved modeling accuracy and overall production speed. It was exciting to use iPhone beyond just shooting. I came to realize that I shouldn’t just make a film. I should make a film that a normal camera can’t. A film that’s only possible with iPhone.
IPhone has this unique personality, this power… That’s how I feel.
